Long Term Early Childhood Substitute Teacher – Nature Based Program

Ann Arbor, MI
Full Time
Entry Level
ECE Subhub is seeking an energetic, adaptable Long‑Term Early Childhood Substitute Teacher to support one of our nature‑immersive partner programs in the Ann Arbor area. This role is perfect for an educator who loves the outdoors, embraces child‑led exploration, and thrives in a diverse, inclusive community.

This placement is at a program that spends the majority of every day outside, exploring natural playscapes, gardens, and the surrounding community, rain, shine, mud, or snow. Educators who succeed here enjoy getting messy, staying active, and supporting children as they learn through movement, nature, and hands-on discovery. The program operates across two locations (Upper and Lower School), each offering unique environments for children to explore.

🌿 Lower School (Ages 6 weeks–2.5 years)
  • Child‑to‑teacher ratio: 4:1
  • Daily attendance: 25 children
  • Hours: 8:30am–5:30pm
  • Nature‑based themes woven into daily routines
  • Small, loving “family groups” with mixed‑age play
  • Organic snacks provided morning and afternoon
  • Cloth‑diaper friendly and baby‑wearing supportive
  • Warm, nurturing environment for infants and toddlers
🌱 Upper School (Ages 2.5–5 years)
  • Child‑to‑teacher ratio: 8:1
  • Daily attendance: 30 children
  • Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–5:30pm
  • Classrooms designed for exploration across subjects and materials
  • Majority of the day spent outdoors in natural playscapes and gardens
  • Community walks and neighborhood exploration
This program is deeply committed to inclusivity and welcomes every kind of person, including a strong and visible LGBTQ+ community. Their team reflects a wide range of identities, backgrounds, and experiences, and they value educators who bring openness, authenticity, and respect to their work. They are also open to all experience levels, making this a wonderful placement for both emerging and seasoned educators.

Educators here view children as capable, curious learners who grow through exploration, problem‑solving, and meaningful interactions with the natural world. You’ll support children as they investigate materials, collaborate with peers, and develop confidence through outdoor play and discovery.

At ECE Subhub, you’ll be supported every step of the way. As a long‑term substitute, you’ll have opportunities to assist or lead in curriculum implementation, outdoor routines, relationship‑building, and the daily rhythms of a nature‑based classroom.
